One last thing before I untie my wife from the computer and tie her to the cooker. (I did all the housework while she was relaxing in the gym sauna this morning)
For those who aren't driving instructors we have a habit (or I do) of saying to the pupil on approaching a bend or corner. "What would you expect to find around that bend?" The answer is always, "Don't know"
My last lesson of the year with a new pupil, asked him the same question and his answer was, "My uncles car." Sure enough his uncle lived just around the corner and his car was parked outside!
You can't win them all.
All the Very Best to everyone.

Yet another pupil goes.
Well done Lucy Kenworthy, Lucy suddenly decided two weeks ago she would take her test before Christmas and as today was her only day off (mine also) she would do it then. Knowing she couldn't possibly be so luck I said O.K. I'll forgo my day off. Not Lucy she even got a good time missing the rush hour and mums picking up kids.

The office is
run by texting, there aren’t any real live people and the few who can answer
the phone haven’t a clue. I gave them a
list of post codes, the problem is I work in 5 OL post codes but they would
text me pupils an hour’s drive away because it was OL.
When I
started there were just two DD instructors in our area, met the other
instructor in a supermarket car park a couple of weeks after I joined and she
said it was hard getting work from them, you had to text every day to remind
them you wanted work. The poor woman had their car so was stuck with them,
she’s still around.
The two of us
quickly grew to half a dozen and by this time I was so disillusioned with them I’d
stripped off the D/D decals. The other D/D instructors one by one started
driving around with their own old boxes on the roof. Haven’t seen any for quite
some time now.
When you
complain (by text) about not having any work they text you a list of inquiries
and tell you to ring them.
One week they
took the franchise from both the Standing Order and my debit card, because even
though my statement said the Standing Order had been paid they said they hadn’t
received it, and……. They charged me an extra £3 for using the debit card.
Drive Dynamics (things can only get bader, bad grammar I know)
Took a few
days to sort out because I insisted on ‘speaking’ to someone, the problem is
the finance department are very busy Monday and Tuesday because they have the
incoming franchise to cope with. Then from Wednesday they have to start work on
the money to be paid out on the Friday. I did get the £99 back, but had to
fight for the £3. Probably cost me more in phone calls and texts but it was the
principal.
I was allowed
2 free franchise weeks and was told to apply for them quickly as only a certain
amount of instructors per week were allowed free franchise. As we had a cruise
booked for July, I applied in March but was told the only weeks available were
what were to be my last two weeks of the 6 month contract.
In the
meantime they decided that instead of text they would operate an email system,
if you had a problem you mailed them and got an auto reply saying they would
respond in three working days. They didn’t, and I’m not sure what happened to
that system because it was never mentions again.
The
organisation at D/D deteriorated even more as the weeks went on, they would
text me saying I hadn’t paid my franchise. By this time the first thing I did
on Monday, my day off was to go into the bank to check the franchise had been
paid. Then sure enough I would get a text asking for it. There were so many
mistakes I can’t possible get everything in the correct order.
The next was
for them to take the £99, plus of course the handling charge, which incidentally
I didn’t pay the first few weeks while I was working up to full franchise from
my debit card even, thought it had been paid by standing order.
This was when
I discovered how good the personal bankers at my bank were, I got the money
refunded, had to fight for the extra £3 and the bank put a stop to D/D having
access to my debit card.
More to come this is only the good bits.

Drive Dynamics
After my big
moan about price cutting someone suggested a franchise to which I replied after
Drive Dynamics no way. Here’s the story, in the time I was with them so much
went on I’m afraid this will have to be in chapters.
Last Christmas
was the first holiday spent at home for a long, long time. It was cold and miserable
so decided that in the New Year after 12 years of making a reasonable living,
with two holidays and a couple of weekends away each year I was suddenly doing
something wrong so looked into a franchise and unfortunately went to work for
Drive Dynamics.
After a few
conversations over the phone we drove up to Leeds to finalise things while they
decaled out my car. Had to take my wife because as you all know she’s the
computer person and part of working for them I was told I would have to keep an
on-line diary, this way they could also keep check on how much work I had. As
soon as we arrived we were offered a cup of tea, unfortunately like the on line
diary and pupils it never arrived.
I signed up
for six months, with the knowledge I would have to give them a further four weeks’
notice to quit, even got a pupil before we left the office and the wife started
thinking about the Christmas holiday to come. The franchise was £99 per week
but started off lower and slowly built up over a few weeks so that you had lots
of work before you got to the £99.
The first
mistake was allowing them to use my debit card for the first few payments as they
would change each week, then it would be by standing order once the £99 per
week kicked in. Paid the first two weeks then got texts the following week
because they couldn’t access my debit card. We eventually discovered they were
putting the incorrect number in, which they say was the number I’d given them.
At this stage I hadn’t discovered that you don’t argue with them because they
know what they are doing?
They have a
system whereby they will only pay each instructor £200 per week, so if someone
booked 20 hours at £289, the instructor would get £200 the first week but would
have to wait for the second week for the £89. Once you had done that first lesson, providing
your text got in no later than Tuesday you would get paid on Friday. They also introduced,
a few months later a system whereby, they text you a pupil, which you obviously
book in as quickly as possible to get paid. But with the new system they would
withhold the money for a further 14 days in case the pupil asked for their
money back. I must have been good because no one asked for their money back!!!

Valet Parking
Did you know this?
Of 233 comprehensive car insurance policies, 49% excluded valet parking. Photograph: Rex
Do you hand over your keys to a valet parking service at the airport before flying off on holiday? You could be left with a large bill: research by comparison site Gocompare.com found that half of all insurancepolicies do not cover damage to a vehicle while it is in the control of valet parking.
Gocompare.com reviewed 233 comprehensive car insurance policies and found that valet parking was excluded by 49% of policies. Scott Kelly, Gocompare's head of car insurance, said: "Valet parking, once the preserve of Hollywood movies, is becoming a popular option in the UK with many airports, major hotels and entertainment venues now offering 'meet and greet' services. Valet parking is a convenient way to park your car, especially at airports where it will save you having to drag heavy luggage on to a car park shuttle bus, but you need to consider the implications for your car insurance."
Some valet parking companies claim drivers are covered by their own insurance. But Gocompare said the terms and conditions offer little peace of mind. "Generally operators offer very limited cover for damage to your car, which you will need to spot and report to them on collection, and possessions left in your car are generally excluded."
Meet and greet parking services generally cost little more than the price of 10 days in a long-stay car park, but although many people are happy with the service, it is a business plagued with horror stories.
This summer, BBC1's Your Money, Their Tricks programme tested six different services at three major airports. Each car was fitted with a tracking device which told the programme's investigators whether it actually went to the car park that was promised and, crucially, whether it stayed there.
At Heathrow, the service was precisely as advertised. But at Gatwick, the tracking device found that the car, although initially taken to a secure car park, was 24 hours later driven to a residential address in Crawley – which the programme makers said appeared to be the home of the company's employee. Later, it was returned to the car park.
The other car in Gatwick, and the two in Luton, were taken to compounds that the programme makers alleged were not secure sites monitored by CCTV.

CLEAN SHEET
9/11/2013 One of Green School of Motoring’s proudest
days. Actor Robert O’Flahery passed his
driving test with a clean sheet.
Yes it’s been done before, but not I’m sure with so many
hurdles to cross. He started his lessons while living a few streets away, then
work took him away for a few weeks, back for another couple of weeks then away
again until he ended up in deepest darkest Cheshire.
Instead of doing the sensible thing and finding a local
instructor he came by bus/train for infrequent lessons, with one sensible day
when I gave up my Sunday and he did six hours.
Ten minutes after I should have picked him up at the
train station, in appalling weather he called to say he was on a coach stuck at
the bottom of Daisy Nook with cars sliding down the steep hill towards them.
He should have been on a train from Manchester to
Ashton-u-Lyne but he was put on a coach driven by someone from Mars. Instead of
one long straight main road the driver ended up getting stuck at the bottom of
a country lane that coaches never use.
Got him to the test centre, for his 1.30 test with black
sky’s and the weather worsening by the minute.
His test was conducted during one of the most horrendous thunderstorms
we’ve had in a long time accompanied with giant hailstones and he got a clean
sheet.
Remember your Driving Instructor Robert when you’re
famous in Hollywood, after today’s stress a holiday would be nice.
Well done Robert and remember with a clean sheet you
don’t have any excuse but to Drive Safely.

Cancellations
I would like
some input please. Moaning to another instructor at the test centre a couple of
months ago about cancellations he said he very rarely gets cancellations.
I seem to
recall quite a while back having the same moan and they had the same reply,
they don’t get cancellations? What am I doing wrong?
This week a
young lady who has the same time every Saturday morning, her test in a couple
of weeks. Texted and said she’d forgotten about her lesson and booked a hairdressing
appointment?
Another who
was having problems with baby sitters changed from evening to Saturday because
mum was always available. She works one Saturday in four until noon when I pick
her up from work rather than home. This
was her working week but she’s had to cancel because she can’t get a baby
sitter.
Replies
please – is it just me. We celebrate when I have a week without a cancellation.
Can’t remember the last celebration.

Oh Boy
Been looking through some old diaries, and I think I
should write a comedy series. I’m sure I’m not the only instructor with
memorable pupils
One lady after about 10 lessons with another instructor,
either 3 months or ages ago? Couldn’t quite remember, decided she was ready for
her test. She wanted to book a block of
20 hours with her test at the end. I offered her an assessment lesson which she
took but it was soon apparent perhaps another 0 on the end of the 20 might be
better.
She’s already taken her Theory and passed with flying
colours, she said, but when asked what the National Speed Limit sign
meant. She didn’t have a clue. Then I asked
if she knew the traffic lights sequence, she could only remember that RED meant
GO.
She wanted to know how will she know what speed to do on
her test. I said to watch the road
signs. Her answer was she kept forgetting them, there were so many to remember
and also once you’ve passed your Theory it doesn’t matter.
She didn’t book any more lessons she
said she would go back to her previous instructor because he didn’t keep making
her mess about and wasting time changing gear.

Is it called Dangerous Driving?
A relative of mine has just been tail ended.
Sat at a roundabout waiting to emerge they were hit from
behind by a builders van, resulting in little or no damage to the beat up van but the back of the car suffered serious
damage.
The reason for the accident? The van driver couldn’t stop because
a plastic bottle had rolled under the brake pedal. Apparently the foot well was full of tools,
crayons, and even a jack. He said he kept telling his boss to clear it out.
Not a lot you can say to that apart from do we have to tell
people not to litter the floor with junk, doesn’t common sense tell them a bottle
might roll toward the peddles? Or do I
just expect too much from people.

Passports
Nothing to do with driving instruction but worth knowing.
A while back I said to book
your Theory/Practical Driving tests go to the official Ugov site or use me website,
either of which will charge you a booking fee.
Just heard of a couple who
paid £98 to get their passports checked and sent, plus they also had to pay
£72.50 each for their passports.
They were checked by “passportdirect.org.uk”
the home page apparently stated it was an ‘Official IPS Website’
I renewed my passport a
couple of months back. Got it checked and sent by our local Post Office and
thought the charge of £8.75 rather expensive.
Apparently not.

Renault owners beware!
I'm now on my 4th Clio, the first two had trouble with the timing belt tensioners, the 3rd was great.
Last week my 12 plate Clio started making a familiar noise so I phoned Renault in Stockport, Greater Manchester. Took a few hours off last Thursday 10 October and drove down to let them see it.
A mechanic I assume, came out to have a look and said it wasn't the timing belt but the alternator. Renault don't keep spares and have to be ordered which I knew about from passed experience. I mean why would a Renault dealership keep Renault spares in their service area!!!!!!
It was consequently booked in for Monday 14th, had to get it there for 8.30am and they would need it all day, understandable. Took an hour to get there, highest speed probably 20mps up our street then for just a few seconds 40mps on the M60. My wife following behind in her thirsty BMW to bring me back.
2pm I started phoning hoping to get the car back before we got caught in the returning rush hour traffic jam. Took for ever for someone on reception to answer, even longer to get through to the service department where the only person who could help wasn't available but would return my call within minutes. By 4pm I'm beginning to lose my temper, which I admit isn't difficult.
Then came the good news, they would do it Tuesday, if they spare arrived. I didn't swear, very difficult but apparently I misunderstood. They didn't say they would do it Monday they said they wanted it for the day to find out what was wrong with it, then they would order the part and with a bit of lock it would be done the following day. The chap who initially looked at it and said it was the alternator, wasn't official, and also there are 6 different alternators for my car so they can't order one until they have taken out the old one to see which it is. They can't put the car's details in the computer to discover which alternator it is, because they have to actually take it out and look at it. (I have not been drinking) Couldn't speak to any managers because none were on site.
Because I made a fuss they are going to do it Thursday morning, the book time is 2½hrs for the job, so I shall make sure I'm sat in reception as soon ass they open. Perhaps a manager may be there!!!!!!
Anyone local, stay clear of Renault Stockport.

When I bought my 12 plate Clio it cost me an extra £50 for a spare wheel, the weight of the spare makes the car less fuel efficient, so instead you get an 'Inflation Kit'.
My argument against that was, 'what happens if you rip out the side wall of the tyre?' The answer was it's doesn't happen very often.
Earlier this week I heard of that happening to a local instructor, apparently he didn't even know he didn't have a spare just assumed he would have one.
Then reading the daily paper later that evening the RAC said that in the 12 months up to August 2013 it got 120,000 call out to unrepairable punctures, none of which had a spare.
I'm old fashioned and don't move with the times so I'll stick to having a boring spare!

After a conversation with a pupil can I remind everyone not to put photo's of their driving licence, passport or student card on the internet.
Talking with my pupils not one of them believed me that someone could copy, say their driving licence and be using it. They were even more shocked when I said the first they would know would be when a letter informing them of some motoring offence arrived in the post.

Just finished 20 hours with the pupil from hell. Dad, who apparently left home, (not surprised) booked and paid for 20 hours. Her first words were along the lines of-: "I don't want to *** be here and I'm telling you now no *******one makes me do what I don't ******** want."
However she had to do the lessons because ****dad and his evil ***** girlfriend would kill her.
Didn't have dads address or phone number so couldn't return the money and run, so we wasted two hours every week on an estate, nearly got her onto the roads once but at the end of the street both feet came off the peddles and with the car still moving she folded her arms. "Told you I wasn't ********** doing it"
Five minutes before the end of the last lesson had to dual her because she took off her seat belt and was getting out of the car before making it safe.
Why do parents do this to 17 year old girls? My grand daughter said at 17 she wasn't learning to drive. At 21 she realised she had to, put her mind to it and soon passed, now she's considering taking a trailer test so she can tow her horse box.
Had a similar problem with another girl, first 10 paid for hours she made it clear she didn't want to be here. Next ten mum came along to make her behave. Fortunately the mum is an acquaintance so after daughter slammed out of the car on the last lesson I was able to persuade mum to go away and think about it. it. She hasn't had a lesson since but they bought her her own car which has never been driven.

Just read in an Instructor magazine how one particular driving school has lots of pupils because the pupil is allowed to choose the day and time of their lesson. Apparently all other driving schools don't allow this and the instructor tells the pupil when the next lesson is.
I must be thick because I 'm missing something somewhere. My pupils tell ME when they're available and not the other way round.
Would be interesting there hear others views on thsi.

My day with the Motorway police. Conclusion. We need more.
I would like to thanks Chadderton Traffic Unit for giving me
this opportunity to spend a shift with them, I think on the whole I kept quiet
and behaved myself. Simon my driver, worked not stop from 7am until 2.30pm with
a few minutes break in a police waiting area for a car which was thought to be
coming our way. After leaving me at 2.30
he was faced with a couple of hours of paper work. The motorway police have
always been ‘just there’ never at the right time. But after my shift with Simon
who also kept me informed of what and why, while managing to listen to and
respond to constant messages on the radio I was very impressed in his
professionalism. Now I know we all complain there are not enough police about,
I agree, we were constantly dashing from one incident to another, some serious
some not. This isn’t any reflection on Simon he can only be watching one way,
but I saw people on phones and as he explained had there been two coppers in
the car the other one who saw the offence could book them. Now we’re back to
the same old - same old, we don’t have enough police and after seeing the way
people drive with a police presences I’m sure accidents would be a lot lower
because people would drive slower, pay more attentions to what is happening
around them instead of being distracted by their precious mobiles and whatever
else it is that distracts them.

My day with the Motorway Police
Part 4
Little more cruising and coming back through Oldham on the hard
shoulder a gentleman is running back to his car complete with caravan so we
stopped and discovered he was on the hard shoulder because he had run back to
see if his mate was still following him. It gets better now, he could have been
booked for being a pedestrian on the hard shoulder, no tail lights on the
caravan, registration on caravan different to the one on the car. But he
managed to top all that by not being insured to drive the car, he was driving
it because his boss told him to. He was actually working for a circus and it
looked as if all the clowns had come to town on the same day. It took a full
hour from seeing him running to getting the vehicle and caravan towed away.
On the whole it was a most informative day not to mention
entertaining for some of the excuses people came up with as to why they
shouldn’t be booked. I think what I get from this more than anything else is we
need more police, throughout the whole day we were a very visible presence and
with those few exceptions the more we were seen the more people didn’t break
the law, and if the police ever want someone to ride around in a marked police
car just as deterrent I’ve already volunteered. There is just no comparison
whatsoever in the actions of drivers I see from my Green School of Motoring car
and what I saw from a marked police car.

My day with the motorway police
Part 3
Five minutes later we see a five foot length of steel across
the middle and outside lane and while we’re on the hard shoulder waiting for a
rolling road block to take effect so it can be cleared cars are racing past
seeing it at the last moment and having tyres shredded which meant several
vehicles needing assistance on the hard shoulder. Simon got out to clear the
carriageway once the rolling road block took effect.
Little more driving and being visible took us to the police waiting area at the side of the
west bound M62 to keep an eye on traffic generally and to look out for one
particular vehicle which might be coming
our way, that turned out to be a no show. But I must say with a marked police
car sitting there everyone behaved themselves.
Later as we came down to the roundabout joining the M60 to
the M62 someone had broken down at the
lights so Simon tucked the car in behind them for their safety got out and
rustled up a police tow to a safer place with a breakdown vehicle.

Traffic Police
Part 2
Strolling up the M62 at about 60mph watching everyone
behaving themselves, in the outside lane was a car heading East bound speeding,
we followed him at a distance for several miles without lights or sirens.
Eventually we caught him up as he was doing just over 80mph in the centre lane tailgating
and over taking. When Simon pulled him over onto the hard shoulder he said the
reason he kept overtaking at speed was because he’d heard that from today (Monday)
you could be booked for loitering in the centre lane and yes he did see us
behind him but didn’t want to get booked so kept overtaking. When it was
pointed out to him that he could have just kept his speed down he just kept
saying he didn’t want to get booked for being in the centre lane. He didn’t get
booked for being in the centre lane but did get booked for speeding. Had he
lived closer to home I would have given him one of my cards and offered
refresher lessons.

My day as an Observer with our local Traffic Police.
Part 1
Arrived at Chadderton Police Traffic Headquarters for 7am
and was quickly ushered into Simon’s BMW 330d.
where, with lights and sirens we headed for an incident on the motorway.
Not nice so we’ll skip over that.
From there we went towards Stockport and saw a driver
without seat belt. Followed him off the motorway and by that time he had put on
his seat belt, he was invited into the back of the police car. When asked if he knew why he’s been stopped
he replied, “For using my mobile”
When the car was checked on the ANPR the driver showed up as
having previous convictions for using a mobile. But since he wasn’t actually
seen using it he was only booked for the seat belt offence.
As we finished with the seat belt a call came through about
20 miles away and so the next thing we know we’re flying along the motorway
with lights and sirens at about 110mph. Ten miles further on the call was
cancelled. So back down to about 60mph.

Booking Tests
Can't seem to figure out how to explain to pupils that when they went to book any of their tests they either go through Direct Gov or through my website, where they can book their tests at no extra cost.I constantly tell them not to just put in book my test or whatever it is they use to be directed to a booking agency where it seems some charge as much as an extra £20 booking fee.

Orange Sunrise
Useful advice! Just returned from an all inclusive Mediterranean cruise, not sure if you could get free booze for 24 hours or not? But we became addicted to the non alcoholic cocktail Orange Sunrise. Came home, bought everything we needed to recreate the drink.
What a mistake, we either didn't mix it correctly or could it be that it tasted better on location on the back of a cruise ship in the hot (34deg) Mediterranean Sea than cold, wet Manchester?

Green School of Motoring Ashton-U-Lyne has just lost a pupil because I'm holding him back. He booked his test and I told him he wasn't taking it in my car. The reasons;- One his last lessons I had to stop the car at red lights three times, his grand dad said it's o.k. to go through on red if they've just changed! He considers he doesn't need to slow down at junctions on back streets. Had to take the wheel off him because he didn't see a parked car. That was my fault because he can't be expected to see in front and use his mirrors at the same time. this by the way is an average lesson.
His mum phoned 15 minutes before the lessons to cancel all future lessons because he knows he's a good driver.

Sean Greens School of Motoring - Google+ Do you know why I write boring blogs? Because they are all about pupils cancelling lessons.
Love the hot sunny weather but I don't work when it's hot, two days into my working week and already as many cancellations as hours left to work. Today first 5 hours cancelled, one may have broking leg or ankle but could re-book for next week, another caught e-coli over night.
So with just a 1 hour lesson remaining this evening I said to the wife if it wasn't for that 1hr we could say, 'sod it we'll go out for the day.' But you can't let pupils down also can't afford to cancel lessons, then guess what? 4.30 text says pupil been rushed to hospital.

Sean Greens School of Motoring - Google+ Love this weather however, there is a down side. It's that word that driving instructors hate. Cancellations, come Saturday I may get the day off. Weather to good to be wasting time having driving lessons.

Sean Greens School of Motoring - Google+
Sean Greens School of Motoring - Google+ Green School of Motoring has just woken up to the fact that sometimes you have to give up on pupils who constantly cancel. I was lenient because they were also a neighbour but even neighbours can only take the *************** so often. Can anyone beat 23 hours of cancellations. Shouldn't think there is anyone else out there so stupid.

New test centre opened in Greater Manchester, you can now take your driving test from Halfords at the Snipe Retail Park Ashton-U-Lyne. Seams a bit strange when ten minutes either side of it we already have Hyde and Failsworth.

Cancellations
Instructors do you get lots of cancellation? Or is it just me. It appears these days a week without cancellations is a rarity. A couple of weeks ago we had another rarity up here in the North of England, warm, sunny weather.
Sunday and Mondays are my days off, full days work Tuesday from there it quickly went down hill, grandma's died again, even got one call from a pupil who had been rushed into hospital and was in the resuscitation room. Honest, I'm assuming he asked them to hold back on saving his life while he phoned his driving instructor to cancel as you would and book for the following week! By the time we got to Saturday a 9.30am until 6.30 pm day I had 1 hours work 9.30 till 10.30.
